blog number 1: Human Carrying Capacity

Summary:

This reading began with a look at a fairly well documented  population's past to gain an understanding of carrying capacity.  This included suspected reasons for fluctuations, estimated growth and decline rates, as well as why it is thought this civilization utilized their materials in such a manner (as well as why the could no longer continue these uses).  The exert also discussed the possibility of calculating a carrying capacity for humans on earth, and the complicated model it would require.

Critical thinking:
2. In what sense does the Earth not have a single carrying capacity for human beings?

The Earth can be said to have many human carrying capacities based on the region being discussed.  Areas which have abundant food and water sources along with fertile soil can sustain a much larger population than a desert region which very few species find hospitable.  Based on a large variation of natural resources it can be said that some areas can sustain more human life than others.
